Tennis team ‘young but talented,’ says coach

Ramona High School’s 2009 boys tennis team opened its season by beating Brawley and losing to former Valley League foe San Pasqual.
Josh Leiber is the only returning all Valley Leaguer. Leiber was second team all league in 2008.
The team is young but talented, according to Coach Doug Failla.
Failla lists 12 athletes on his varsity roster. Derek Streeter, John Randol, Garrett Flynn and Alejandro Cervantes are seniors. Leiber, Tyler Davidson and Chris Bowersox are juniors on the varsity roster.
Cameron Ruland, Liam Swan and Travis Stout made the club as sophomores, and freshmen John Shupe and Tyler McDonald have made the varsity.
Ramona opened the season at home with a 12-6 loss to San Pasqual. Davidson went 1-6, 4-6 and 6-1 as the number one singles player.
Ruland won a team point by going 0-6, 3-6 and 6-0. Swan posted scores of 0-6, 0-6 and 1-6.
The number one doubles team of Randol and Leiber won two sets by going 0-6, 6-3 and 6-3. Streeter and Flynn went 3-6,0-6 and 1-6. Shupe and Davidson won two team points by posting scores of  6-2, 7-5 and 3-6.      
The Bulldogs bounced back to earn their first win of the season by beating Brawley High School 16-2.      
Leiber moved to number one singles and responded by winning three sets. He turned in a strong 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0 performance.
Ruland took 3 points by going 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-0. Swan went 6-2, 0-6 and 4-6.     
The doubles teams did not lose a set. Randol and Stout manned the number one position and turned scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1.
Streeter and Flynn won three team points with scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0. Shupe and McDonald won three sets by going 6-3, 6-2 and 6-0.
