Vikings shut out Bulldogs in ‘09 water polo playoffs
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Although Ramona High School’s boys water polo team earned a berth in the CIF Division II playoffs, the Bulldogs were shut out in their first-round match Nov. 12 at La Jolla.
The Vikings scored eight first-period goals en route to a 15-0 victory over the Bulldogs at the high school’s Coggan Pool.
“I felt a mindset situation,” said Coach Donnie Williams. “As soon as they got down a little bit, there was no hope.”
Ramona earned the 12th seed in the Division II playoffs.
“I was really happy with the seed,” Williams said.   “It’s the highest seed we’ve had with the boys since I’ve been here.”
The 12th seed gave Ramona a first-round match at fifth-seeded La Jolla.
“They were swimming pretty hard and they were pressing quite a bit,” Williams said of the Vikings.
La Jolla had an 11-0 halftime lead.
“The whole defense broke down,” Williams said. “It was disappointing to not even get on the board. It’s been one of those up and down seasons.”
The playoff loss ended Ramona’s season with an overall record of 15-14-1, including a Valley League mark of 7-5, which tied Ramona for third in the conference standings.
“They have worked hard all this season,” Williams said of his players.  “They were all pretty well disappointed.”
The Bulldogs were not invited to the 2008 CIF playoffs after finishing last year’s regular season with an 11-16 record, including a 6-8 Valley League performance which ranked fifth among the league’s teams.
